As Director of Web Experience Design for Sun, I oversaw three major design transformations to Sun’s customer-facing websites. Each update provided an opportunity to increase the reach and intelligence of our modular, systems-based approach to designing and coding the sites.

Over time, my team developed and managed a comprehensive component-based design system including 250 modular elements and 70+ page templates. At sun.com’s zenith, we were deploying a branded, user-tested, analytics-friendly design system to 60 country sites and dozens of additional venues. Monthly distribution of a single CSS delivered upgrades to more than 2M pages.

Critical to the success (and sanity) of our small team were the tools, processes, and documentation we created to underpin our efforts. In addition to the value of achieving consistent quality for brand and user experience, the cost savings from implementing this program across the company were measured in millions.

VISION MAP – Describing our environment, sorting out gaps, developing solutions. We focused on stakeholder and cross-team relationships, project and practice management, productivity and change management.

A crucial first step in developing and optimizing our design practice was the creation of a VISION MAP to describe our unique ecosystem, identify gaps and propose solutions. We focused on stakeholder and cross-team relationships, project and practice management, change management, and productivity. Our solution had to acknowledge actual constraints and process updates had to provide measurable improvement.

These slides below show some of the resources, tools and documentation developed to support our journey toward a more scalable, strategic, effective, value-adding design program and practice.
